Osteopath vs Physio for Back Pain: Which Should You See?

Back pain doesn’t care which profession you book. But if you’re standing at the fork trying to decide, here’s the short version: both osteopaths and physiotherapists treat back pain well, and the research doesn’t hand a clear win to either one.
Choose an osteopath if you suspect the pain is connected to something else going on in your body: a stiff hip, a locked-up upper back, a shoulder that’s been compensating for months. Osteopaths tend to look at how one area affects another rather than isolating the sore spot.
Choose a physio if you want a more structured, exercise-led program built specifically around the injured area, with a clear progression of drills.
What Actually Happens in Each
An osteopath’s session usually combines hands-on work (stretching, joint mobilisation, targeted pressure) with a broader assessment of your posture and movement patterns. A physio’s session tends to lean more heavily on exercise prescription from the first visit, alongside manual therapy.
Our Take
At Strive Osteopathy, we find that back pain rarely starts where it hurts. Treating the local area gets short-term relief. Finding what’s above or below it, and then building strength there, is what makes it last.
